I used to be winter’s biggest fan, and although the appreciation for the season still exists, it seems as though some of the excitement for it has waned a bit. Over two years without seeing a single snowflake doesn’t help matters (snow is absolute magic, and no one can tell me otherwise).

When you go from spending the majority of your life in The Frozen Tundra and then move to a land where most things don’t even hibernate, it can be a shock to the system that requires several years to acclimate to. The calendar says “winter”, about half of the plants are asleep and the trees are bare. But rather than feeling like a full-stop end to a season, it brings an overwhelming sense of a pensive awaiting. Not necessarily reaching a conclusion, but not yet ready for an inception either.

Then, one day, it all begins to change. Though the drab landscape still casts a pall on eyes searching for vibrancy, there is an undeniable sense that something is stirring. Even with bitter winds still in tow, the breath of renewed possibilities floats in. The inevitable return of life – though still some weeks away – is palpable once more.

Biologically speaking, humans are hardwired to interpret tones of green as bringing sustenance, and with it much prosperity and peace of mind. It is in our nature to feel a little lost in landscapes that lack the hues that signal to us as areas to thrive in. This is just one piece of the puzzle, of course, but it helps us to understand why the doldrums of winter can take hold of us so.

Green Opal is a unique stone as it very specifically represents life renewed by water, just as the melting snows usher forth the first blossoms of spring. Citrine is the sun of the earth, bringing with it much warmth, joy and optimism. And I placed a pearl in this piece to represent the seed that lay in wait for what seems like eons, only to emerge reborn as new in its own good time.

“Vernal” is an ode to what is arguably the most anticipated time of year for all of creation. Where we can finally cast off our protective winter coats and bask in the promise of fresh perspectives and unlimited potential once more.
