Hatshepsut was one of only 3 female Pharaohs in ancient Egypt, and arguably the most powerful and influential of her feminine peers. Her reign lasted for an astonishing 20 years and included the construction of an elaborate mortuary temple, which to this day is considered to be one of the greatest architectural achievements of the ancient world. There is no doubt that she flawlessly proved her rightful place among the dynastic rulers of Egypt, yet I wonder if she, too, was often plagued by doubt in her feminine power.

Though it is well documented that she was indeed a female Pharaoh, many reliefs, carvings or statues made for her image depicted a figure of much more masculine physical attributes than feminine. Pharaohs were in full control of how their likeness was to be portrayed, so I can’t help but wonder what made her shy away from embracing herself as she was; a great reigning WOMAN.

Whether to convey that she was as strong as any man or to more fully secure herself in a predominantly male role, it strikes me as very telling that throughout the ages, we women have felt the need to at some point abandon that which makes us mighty in our own right.

It is incredible to see that over millenia, we have inadvertently perpetuated the notion that female characteristics are somehow inferior to those that are thought of as inherently masculine. But strength, courage, tenacity and wit are by no means strictly masculine traits, and in seeing ourselves as the lesser of the two, we have failed to recognize how we are the complimentary half that completes the whole, and ultimately powerful entities in our own, unique way.

We were never meant to match a man pound-for-pound, but rather supply balancing attributes that, in turn, are supplied to us. The strength of an individual – male or female – does not lie in what they are… it lies in what they are not. True personal power lives in the abilities that you alone possess, and the grace you show to bestow those abilities upon a world sorely in need of having equilibrium restored.
