On the eve of this new year of opportunity, I started to think about the typical resolutions people make and how they are more often than not a pledge to limit or deny ourselves a vice or habit. They are admirable goals in their own right, but I sometimes wonder if the reason they tend to fail so quickly is because we chose to start a new cycle with self punishment rather than true self-improvement.

I began to think of how magnificent it would be if we would instead vow to stop saying no ourselves about certain things. More rest, more personal enrichment, more expression. What if instead of limiting ourselves further, we pledge to broaden our scope of ourselves? What if we choose to honor our core needs rather than continue to ignore their ardent cries of acceptance?

Sunflowers are representative of just such a stalwart devotion to an ideal; they symbolize upholding promises made to those we love… and that, of course, should include ourselves.
