Being an earth sign, I surprise myself at how often I feel a connection to water-related analogies and wisdom. Perhaps it’s because water comes to cleanse and clarify what the soil has muddied with its grit and overzealous determination.

While creating this piece, I thought about those times when the waters are still; we think we are in a good, safe place when there is no disturbance to create waves, yet the only thing offered back to us is our own stagnant reflection. Nothing moves towards new horizons, nothing new is created, and the light merely bounces off the surface.

But throw stones into that same pool and something magical begins to happen. What appears to be chaos on the surface is actually creating a thousand new points of light – their steep pitch and angles allowing the beams to penetrate depths which previously had seen no glimmering movement. This in turn creates excitement among that which had been stationary in the darkness, piquing curiosity and provoking action from the sedentary and listless.

If there was nothing to occasionally break the surface and disturb the face of the water, there would be no force to encourage those who float in stillness to move towards areas that can lead to new opportunities.

Sometimes the only way something makes a move is when it is pushed to do so. But when compared to the stagnation of remaining silently still, that push – however tumultuous – can be the greatest blessing ever received.
