We have all heard the phrase “Every once in a blue moon” as referring to an occurrence of some rarity, but just how uncommon is a blue moon?
Contrary to what its name suggests, a blue moon has less to do with color and more to do with the calendar. For the most part, the moon completes its cycle and becomes what we know as “full” once per month. But every once in a while, a month may start and end with a full moon, giving us a calendrical blue moon.
There are also seasonal blue moons, whereby the moon becomes full for a 4th time within a given equinox or solstice.
So just how rare are these events? On average, a blue moon occurs once every 33 months or so, giving a span of 2 decades only about 7 blue moons to boast. What’s even more rare is 2 blue moons that occur within the same calendar year… that only happens around 4 times per one hundred years.
Our next blue moon event will be a seasonal one, happening within the summer solstice on August 19th of this year (2024). After that, we won’t see another calendrical blue moon until May 31st, 2026. With spans of time so great between the two, you can easily see why a blue moon is marked as being a magical and awe-inspiring event. 🌙💙
