Description
These hand turned pencil cups are made from red oak that fell on my friend Rodger’s property. He’s the artist/maker on this item and a good friend of mine. Each pencil cup measures about 3″ tall, and about 3″ diameter at their widest point. They all hold approximately 20 pens and/or pencils comfortably and usually more depending on the size and type. The natural red oak hardwood has a bit of weight to it making them very nicely stable and resistant to tipping. They are simple, elegant and very functional. The outside shows the beautiful and pronounced grain of red oak with occasional features including knots and figural grain variations. Each one is unique, and every one of them is beautiful! The simple shape with clean lines and styling is contemporary while the traditional material of natural red oak wood gives them a rustic vintage sort of appeal. These pencil cups will look right at home on just about any desk or in any office from the corner office of a fortune 500 company to the home office of an entrepreneur.
All of Rodger’s hand turned items are treated with food-safe pure linseed oil.
In the Summer of 2020, an eighty-foot red oak tree was uprooted in a storm and fell into Rodger’s field. We cut the tree into logs and had them made into boards at a local saw mill. After stacking the lumber in his barn, Rodger began making plates, bowls, whiskey barrel shot glasses, coffee scoops, chalices and other assorted items, which have brought joy to many people through the following years. Since this new hobby produced a lot of sawdust, his shop became “Rodger’s Sawdust Mill,” established in the year 2020.

About Crabby Crafts
Crabby Crafts is what I’ll optimistically call an “arts collective”. Okay… really it’s a bunch of older guys around Southern Maryland that like to make stuff that we think is cool and because we enjoy making stuff. We found each other via various local woodworking clubs, shows and events and we continue to get together to drink coffee, eat snacks, collaborate on ideas and projects or otherwise support each other’s hobbies.
Mostly this is wood stuff, either lathe-turned goods, traditional woodworking stuff, or wood carving with knife and gouge or power tools. It might be cutting boards, small furniture items, kitchen goods, it might be a walking sticks or canes, or hand carved wooden figures. Basically whatever the person wanted to make.
I’m Jay. I guess I’m the Crab of Crabby Crafts, though I think I’m actually a pretty chill guy. I’m the owner/proprietor of this shop on My Community Made. I’m the youngest in this collective of friends and the most internet savvy by far (low bar TBH though). Thus, I have been voluntimidated into helping the other old guys sell some of their pieces in addition to my own stuff too.
Personally I carve wood traditionally using knives and gouges only and do decorative work using anything from ancient traditional methods like kolrosing to ultra modern methods like lichtenberg fractal burning.
You’ll always be buying from me, Jay. I’ll have the item in my shop and I’ll be the one packaging and shipping it to you. You’ll always know exactly who made the item you’re buying as I’ll include the maker’s details and a short bio in each product’s listing as well as all the other details about the item.
