Description

This sturdy hickory walking stick was hand carved and finished by me, Jay, the proprietor of Crabby Crafts. The stick is about 65″ tall, a good length for a person about 6′ tall OR plenty of extra room to trim the bottom to customize the height to your preferences. If you’d like me to trim it to a custom length, just let me know! The diameter is about 1.5″ at the top tapering to about 1″ at the bottom. It weighs about 2.5 pounds. While mostly straight overall this stick has a slight natural curve right about where the hand falls on it making a great natural handle. I wrapped the handle simply using a cotton cord that is gentle on the hands, and added a glass mushroom charm to the tag end of the handle wrap.

The main carving at the top was hand carved using traditional knives and wood carving gouges, no power tools were used. The facial hair (bear, moustache, and eyebrows) were created using the natural bark of the wood. The round bald head of this wizard (or wood spirit) is comfortable on the palm of the hand for traversing logs and such where elevation changes and is gentle on tarps and tents if used as a support pole. The eyes were inset with powder blue and I used some acrylic gems as accents on the hiking stick where knots showed. I carved a spiral in the outer bark leaving the inner bark from the handle area up to the main carving.  This unique stick gets a lot of attention! I took it to a local renaissance festival and had several patrons and vendors ask me about it and compliment it.

Hickory is a very hard, dense wood which did make it very challenging to carve. It allowed for great detail though and the stick is very strong and should last a long long time. It was finished with a clear gloss polyurethane leaving the bark and lichen and such all visible.

Since the stick is rather long, please expect to spend a bit extra on shipping. I typically ship USPS because they are economical, and their price goes up a fair bit for any item over 60″.

About Crabby Crafts

Crabby Crafts is what I’ll optimistically call an “arts collective”. Okay… really it’s a bunch of older guys around Southern Maryland that like to make stuff that we think is cool and because we enjoy making stuff. We found each other via various local woodworking clubs, shows and events and we continue to get together to drink coffee, eat snacks, collaborate on ideas and projects or otherwise support each other’s hobbies.

Mostly this is wood stuff, either lathe-turned goods, traditional woodworking stuff, or wood carving with knife and gouge or power tools. It might be cutting boards, small furniture items, kitchen goods, it might be a walking sticks or canes, or hand carved wooden figures. Basically whatever the person wanted to make.

I’m Jay. I guess I’m the Crab of Crabby Crafts, though I think I’m actually a pretty chill guy. I’m the owner/proprietor of this shop on My Community Made. I’m the youngest in this collective of friends and the most internet savvy by far (low bar TBH though). Thus, I have been voluntimidated into helping the other old guys sell some of their pieces in addition to my own stuff too.

Personally I carve wood traditionally using knives and gouges only and do decorative work using anything from ancient traditional methods like kolrosing to ultra modern methods like lichtenberg fractal burning.

You’ll always be buying from me, Jay. I’ll have the item in my shop and I’ll be the one packaging and shipping it to you. You’ll always know exactly who made the item you’re buying as I’ll include the maker’s details and a short bio in each product’s listing as well as all the other details about the item.
