These beautiful cedar wood crates are made of Western Red Cedar mill ends from northern Idaho, not only are they lovely to look at, but also have a host of uses from home to farm. Stack them on their sides for shelves, store fruits and veggies, display your canned goods with style, or give that closet an organized elegance — so many uses!

Each piece has been meticulously sanded so you can pet their silky surface like your dog – or cat – without fear of splinters. They’ve also been treated with linseed oil for a beautiful finish that soaks in to protect and highlight cedar’s grain and color. Then they’re given time to cure so you won’t get oil on your belongings.

Mill ends like what we use in these crates are short boards left over when a standard log length is longer than the lumber the buyer wanted…so…extra. Still useful but difficult to market. Generally these materials take a back seat, suffering damage, being burnt, or simply rotting away, but we think – despite its occasional inconsistencies – they deserve a chance to shine.

Please understand, the crates shown are not the exact product. Each crate is unique unto itself, we cannot duplicate the look as wood doesn’t work like that. However, we carefully choose all the wood strips that go into each and every crate. So to be clear, color and grain will vary, and while your crate won’t look exactly like these…it may be even prettier and guaranteed to be one of a kind!

A Brief Story of the Making:

– First the 2 foot 2×8’s are run through a thickness planer to square and pretty them up after years of twisting and damage, which makes them ready to be safely and uniformly cut to size for handles and strips.

– Attractive, split-free pieces are chosen and then rendered down to the appropriate size (thanks to my old table and bandsaws). The handles have their grips cut out and edges rounded with an electric router, before heading off for a rigorous bout of sanding by both hand and multiple machines.

– Strip widths are carefully chosen to balance, minimizing waste in the shop and delivering a pleasing presentation. They all receive a similarly robust sanding and rounding of edges for a finger friendly feel.

– Next the strips are arranged as artfully as we can, glued, nailed, and left to dry for 24 hours.

– With the glue cured, they receive a final sanding to round the edges of the strips where they meet the handles leaving a smooth, lovely feel and look.

– Two generous coats of linseed oil are now applied by hand and left to cure for several days to a week – because even carpentry depends on the weather.

– Finally finished, your new piece is ready to be lovingly packaged (as often as possible in reused materials) and sent to its new home.
