A Holdover From The Renaissance

A spirit ball, sometimes known as a witch ball, is a glass sphere, hand blown, and traditionally was used to deter evil spirits and negative energy. It’s origins of the spirit ball go back to 16th and 17th century England, where they were hung in windows to protect homes from malevolent ghosts and entities. The theory was the evil spirit would be attracted to the beauty of the sphere, and then become trapped, unable to navigate the delicate glass threads and tendrils inside. Being hand-blown, each one was both unique and a work of art; no two were alike. That tradition has carried forth into our modern era, with each ball handmade by a glassblower.

Over the years, the meaning behind the spirit ball has changed to one of love, unity, and positive energy. It’s a popular gift between close friends and family members as a token of affection and good fortune. The spirit ball was said to provide protection and good luck, in addition to being a striking conversation piece. It doesn’t matter whether you believe in the spiritual protectiveness of the spirit ball or simply love its uniqueness and beauty, there is no denying its long and fascinating history.

About Wood Spirit Designs

I have been working with wood and stone since I was in my teens.  I love the endless variety of colors, textures, shapes and energies that each piece of wood, stone, and crystal hold as their own.  Harmonizing them into a unique and special creation is a very fulfilling and relaxing process.  My items range from simple wood timber candle holders, to intricately designed pieces that feature delicate gemstone inlays. Each project starts the same way, with woods being carefully studied, "reading" the grain patterns and natural energies, and, if it contains inlay, selecting the best gemstones to harmonize into a finished piece.  The result is a one-of-a-kind artisan quality item that you will be proud to keep as a family heirloom, or present to someone special as an unforgettable gift.

Please look around to see if there is something that speaks to you.
