Charley Harvey knew he was meant to be a craftsperson. As a teenager, he wrote: ” I am meant to be a craftsman, but it is impossible in this day and age”(1970). He discovered the craft community of Berea Kentucky in 1978. In 1982 he launched Simple Gifts a studio and showroom devoted to Shaker furniture and smallware. His Shaker Oval Boxes sold in 5 Shaker museums and his work was featured in magazines and an early episode of HGTV’s Modern Masters. (1) Shaker Furniture Maker – YouTube
After 20 years, Simple Gifts closed its doors. However, Charley continues to identify as a craftsperson, as well as beekeeper, gardener, and dancer.
Please enjoy the work that is coming out of this small shop nestled between the French Broad River and the Pisgah National Forest, not too far from the Appalachian Trail.
