I’m Kay Derr, a pPhoto of Ownerroud mother of four and a delighted grandmother of eight, living a life deeply intertwined with the beauty of family. The core of my existence was rocked when my father, who meant the world to both my kids and me, unexpectedly left us. In that moment of heart-wrenching grief, I found myself at a loss—unsure of how to handle not only my own sorrow but also the pain my children were experiencing.

Desperate for a way to cope, I stumbled upon a unique outlet: crafting memory bears. It all started with a bear I made for my mother, a heartfelt token to remember my father. Witnessing the joy and solace it brought to her eyes was a balm for my own grieving heart. Crafting became more than just a pastime; it was my way of navigating through the complex emotions surrounding loss.

I continued making these bears, creating 20 more for my siblings, nephews, and nieces. The joy these bears brought to each recipient was unlike anything else. It dawned on me that this creative process wasn’t just a personal coping mechanism—it was a profound way to help others on their own journey through grief.

Motivated by the transformative power of these memory bears, I decided to share this solace with a wider audience. I’ve since handcrafted over 100 bears, each a tangible connection to cherished memories, and I’ve had the privilege of helping others find comfort in times of loss. Through selling these unique keepsakes, I’ve become a small part of the healing process for many individuals and families.

My story is one of love, family, and resilience. From grappling with personal grief to becoming a source of solace for others, I’ve come to realize that even in the face of loss, there’s an enduring capacity for love and healing. As I continue to weave the threads of memory into each bear I create, I stand as a symbol of hope—a reminder that, through creativity and compassion, we can find our way back to joy, even after the darkest of days.
