When I was creating this piece, the phrase “White Cliffs of Dover” came to mind, and upon studying images of this formidably breathtaking seascape in Kent, England, I was actually pretty shocked at how well this style and color scheme matched up.

Then I suddenly remembered a favorite song of mine. Originally performed by Jimmy Cliff, my favorite version was actually sung by Eurythmics lead woman and human rights champion, Annie Lennox, on American Idol “Idol Gives Back” around 16 years ago. The passion with which she performed the song is something that has stuck with me for a very long time.

The song itself is a rather telling story of how one’s circumstances can mercilessly inflict blow after painful blow, yet not completely understanding why we still press on. It’s a daunting prospect to know there are so many more adversities to overcome – often in the face of loneliness – but our will and prideful nature will not allow us to quit short of a permanent end. And that, too, will simply not do.

Using the straits around the cliffs as a metaphor for this rather bleak but determined journey, to me, is absolutely ingenious, and one that I myself have related to many times over.
