Description

Hand carved from a peice of driftwood found on my local beach, heafty and solid, full of character and color, this will fascinate and engage all who see it. The colors and black lines are the result of bacterial action in the wood, called spalting–a nice way to say it’s rotting. Caught at just the right time and dried out to stop the process will produce what you see here; drama and beauty. The turquoise inlay only adds to the drama.

All my work is signed and dated with the year of creation. All my bowls, including my redwood bowls, are made of old-growth wood found on the beach, or from stumps or logs left on private property 100 to 150 years ago by the early logging operations that created the modern Del Norte County community. I find and salvage some, some is brought to me by friends who know what I do, and some of my best has come from trees felled by storm or necessity in people’s yards.

My finish is a food safe durable combination of oils soaked deeply in to bring out the beauty of the wood, and then 8 to 12 and even sometimes 20 hand rubbed coats over that for protection. My finish techniques are proven and fully guaranteed for the life of the bowl (and/or me) for the cost of shipping.

There will be a brochure included in every purchase giving detailed care and cleaning instructions, as well as contact information.
