Scandinavian Vikings from the 8th to 10th centuries revered Amber as a substance with transmissible properties, able to imbue those who possessed it with the strengths and characteristics of whatever form they chose to embody. Amber carvings of animals such as bears were attached to armor and weaponry of the time to evoke the animal’s tenacity and fearlessness for the benefit of a warrior in battle.

In ancient Greece and Rome, women would often wear animal totems carved from Amber to symbolize beauty, purity and fertility depending on the creature depicted. It has also been used by some cultures to solidify the renewal of commitment between partners and pay homage to the enduring wisdom of the elders.

Amber has also been long associated with our diligent companions, the bees, because of its uncanny likeness to honey and its symbolism for our life-sustaining sun; the source of energy which ultimately drives our solar-powered friends.

When I think of the characteristics that bees possess, I think of a deep sense of community – both local and global – and knowing the significance of the particular role you play within it even if hundreds of others appear to be doing the same thing. I think of being able to consider your influence on those whom you will likely never meet, yet your actions now will strongly dictate how they themselves will operate in the future. I also think of the simple joy of having some wondrous little purpose to fulfill every day. That sense of belonging and being wholly satisfied in the present moment. To me, bees are the epitome of a contented soul.

Mathematicians, cartographers, botanists, healers. Bees provide us with an incredible source of insight into the intelligence of the natural world, oftentimes far surpassing the abilities of our own intellect. Yet they remain the ever-humble servant of a greater force; one they perhaps do not fully comprehend but fail to ignore its compelling authority regardless. There is pride of place on this planet. Pride of simply playing your part in the experience, and I feel that is perhaps the greatest lesson we can learn from the bees.

May we all strive to be so assured in our place in the universe.
