    Canis Major, or “The Greater Dog”, was established as one of Ptolemy’s original 48 constellations in the 2nd century. It is the 43rd largest constellation, with 8 main stars including the sky’s brightest, Sirius; and a red hypergiant VY CMa, one of the largest stars known.
    There are several origin stories for the Greater Dog, most notably in Greek mythology. One telling names the dog as Laelaps, a gift given from Zeus to Europa; the second depicts it as Orion’s hunting hound, pursuing Lepus (The Hare) and helping him to battle Taurus (The Bull). By the dawn of the Roman Era, a second, smaller dog was depicted in the stars following Orion (Canis Minor).
